WA: New regulations to suppress terrorist assets

The Federal Government has published a list of terrorists and terrorist organisations
-- and is pledging to freeze their assets under new regulations implemented today.

And while Attorney-General DARYL WILLIAMS says no Australian citizen or resident is
on the list, he says ASIO has identified a number of people in Australia who support terrorist
activities.

Mr WILLIAMS says any reports of suspected terrorists operating in the country are thoroughly
investigated, but he's refused to say whether any terrorist assets had been identified
in Australia.

Australian citizens and companies are prohibited from dealing with any of the persons
or organisations listed today in the Government Gazette.

Mr WILLIAMS says anybody who knows of, or holds assets in relation to any of those
organisations is now required by law to freeze them.

The new regulations fulfill Australia's obligations under a United Nations Security
Council resolution passed in September to suppress the financing of terrorism.
