Pols to Daley: `Cut losses, pay Newsome $15 mil'

To cut the city's losses, Alds. Ed H. Smith (28th) and Arenda Troutman (20th) Wednesday urged Mayor Richard M. Daley to "do the right thing" and pay wrongly convicted James Newsome, 46, who spent 15 years in prison, his jury awarded $15 million.

Their demands come just months after the city agreed to an $18 million out-of-court settlement involving Black unarmed motorist LaTanya Haggerty whose family hired famed lawyers Johnnie Cochran and James D. Montgomery.
