ROCKVILLE, Md. Proposed regulations by the Food and DrugAdministration would require a complete hearing evaluation before aconsumer can purchase a hearing aid.
The FDA held a public meeting here last to discuss the proposedrule. Although current regulations call for an evaluation by amedical doctor before a person is fitted for a hearing aid, adultsover 18 can waive that rule. The agency is considering the newrequirement because of complaints from some consumers that theirhearing aids - which can cost from $400 to $2,000 - do not work ordon't improve their hearing.
